The Kingston map represents colonial Adelaide at the beginning of 1842.
The map was lithographed in London and prints arrived in Adelaide in June 1843. Maps could be bought from Platts' Library in Hindley Street in several finishes – the National Library of Australia's (NLA) copy being "mounted and a case" at 32 shillings (compared to 25 shillings unmounted). The State Library of South Australia (SLSA) also holds a copy of the map and has useful interpretative information on featured and extant buildings.
The mounted map consists of printed paper tiles stuck onto cards with a linen backing to allow folding. At 163 x 122 cm, it is physically very large – in the accompanying photo the map is not fully opened out! NLA's high resolution scan resolves the minute detail (particularly the map reference numbers) by splitting the image into four – selecting the "Down a Level" link reveals these higher resolution images.
In seeking to make the map's information more accessible, I transcribed the map references and recorded Adelaide acre numbers where applicable.
I then placed the features on an online geo-rectified version of the map. I present this information in the form of an interactive map and
a reference table.
The table is helpful to look up a particular location, for example the Tavistock Buildings, which can then be generally found on the map by hovering the mouse over map pins to close in on the desired place. Alternatively you can, within the map, "browse data" and filter by description. For example, "ch" will display churches, chapels and schools. The map and table are below.
Technical: For the interactive map, I first georectified / georeferenced each of the four NLA high resolution files and then made a mosaic from them in MapWarper. I then used the result as the custom background in uMap. (I want to switch to using the same background directly from NLA's georectified map environment once this map becomes available there.) More information: S.T. Gill in Maps.
Correction: In the first version of this page I said the NLA image was not at sufficient resolution to resolve the map reference numbers. I thank Steve Leahy @oz_penguin for correcting me and pointing out the "Down a Level" feature in the NLA image browser.

Note: within the parts of Adelaide – north and south – reference numbers follow the same sequence as acre numbers. (Additional places are noted on the map without having a reference number and these appear at the end of the table.)
