S.T. Gill – Subject – Extinct Crater

SUMMARY: S. T. Gill's subject of an extinct crater is based on a (non-volcanic) rock formation seen on Captain E.C. Frome's 1843 northern expedition. Gill's views were probably based on a sketch by expedition member James Henderson, as Frome had lost his sketchbook on the expedition. This article presents S.T. Gill's extinct crater pictures ranging in date from 1844 to 1855~/1857~.

Of note is Gill signing a pencil sketch (AGSA 697HP8) with "STG 1842" – as this was neither the date of the expedition (he'd forgotten it!) nor the date of his sketch! Dated signatures can't be taken for granted!

Artist: Henderson, James | Date: 1843-07~/1845~
Main listing: S.T. Gill, E.J. Eyre, Symmetry 1844

The view is of a rock formation seen on Captain E.C. Frome's 1843 northern expedition, which at the time was thought to be a volcanic crater. Located south-west of Lake Frome near Reap(ing) Hook Hill. This sketch is by expedition member James Henderson. Captain Frome is probably one of the two characters in the scene.

Frome also did a watercolour of this scene and, given he'd lost his sketchbook on the expedition, it was probably based on this Henderson sketch.

The view is of a rock formation seen on Captain E.C. Frome's 1843 northern expedition, which at the time was thought to be a volcanic crater. This is a watercolour by Frome.

Given Frome lost his sketchbook on the 1843 expedition this may be based on a sketch by companion James Henderson (SLSA B 2434/17). See that sketch for detail on the expedition and their coming across this location.

The view is of a rock formation seen on Captain E.C. Frome's 1843 northern expedition, which at the time was thought to be a volcanic crater.

Gill's picture is likely based on Frome's watercolour. Another sketch was made by expedition member James Henderson (SLSA B 2434/17). Unlike Henderson's sketch, there are no people in this scene. This is the earliest known of Gill's oft repeated illustrations of this scene.

The view is of a rock formation seen on Captain E.C. Frome's 1843 northern expedition, which at the time was thought to be a volcanic crater. Gill's original image is likely based on Frome's watercolour. Gill did an early version of this scene for E.J. Eyre (SLNSW-M PX*D 73 f.5).

It is signed "STG 1842" by Gill, intended to indicate the date of the scene, not the artist's execution. However Gill has inaccurately recalled the date of the Frome expedition which was actually 1843. Appleyard (p58) says "the signature and date, which is incorrect, were added many years later in Melbourne". He dates the corresponding watercolour AGNSW 214.1975 to c.1870. The signature here has a curly tail on the G - a style Gill used around 1855/1857 - and this is a retrospective from that period.

This painting is based on the pencil sketch AGSA 697HP8 and is likely to be a similar date. The January 1856 auction including a work of this subject is further evidence it is a retrospective from around 1855. (Appleyard (p58) dated this c.1870 based on signature and style.)
